The Hawks take to the water to start season
By Rose Sgarlato
SPARTA — It was the season opener for the Hawks at Lake Mohawk Pool on Wednesday, July 5, where the swim team took on the Mountain Lakes Lakers.
Outnumbered by the large team, Lake Mohawk lost to Mountain Lakes 283-373.
“We had a great first meet against a very large Mountain Lakes team,” said Head Coach Hilary Yates. “The coaching staff was impressed by the time drops of our swimmers and their ability to get up and race their opponent.”
Ranging in age categories 8 and under, 9 to 12 and up to 18 years old, this year’s Lake Mohawk Pool Swim Team, the Hawks, is part of the Lakeland Swim Conference. The Hawks will compete every Wednesday evening playing fellow conference members: Erskine Lakes, West Milford, Pequannock, Fayson Lakes and Green Pond. There are also several invitationals along the way with the season ending on Aug. 12 at the “A” Championship at Smoke Rise.
Despite the loss, the team was in great spirits gathering before the official start for a team cheer and reconvening after for a send-off cheer for the Lakers. The weather was crystal clear with no signs of rain making the evening quite ideal for tall of the swimmers and spectators.
“We look forward to the rest of the season and we have big goals for our Hawks,” said Yates.
