Random inquiry reveals stolen license plate
On Jan. 30 at approximately 8:27 pm, P.O. Taylor May was patrolling Lafayette Road and ran a random inquiry on a black Infinity with NY plates. The license plates came back as stolen out of New York City. Officer May stopped the vehicle and Officers Mastandrea, Elig and Griffin responded to provide assistance. May approached the driver, 31 year old Christopher Whiteman of Honesdale, PA, and asked for his driver credentials. A check of Whiteman’s license revealed that his driving privileges were suspended in NY and NJ and that he had two active warrants out of Parsippany, NJ ($150) and Flemington, NJ ($500). Whiteman was placed under arrest and transported to Sparta Police HQ for processing. Both courts were contacted and Parsippany PD advised that they would respond to Sparta to pickup Whiteman. Officer May charged Whiteman with: Receiving Stolen Property, Driving While Suspended, Fictitious Plates and Unregistered and Uninsured Vehicle. Whiteman was advised of a mandatory court appearance and turned over to Parsippany PD.
No headlights, some marijuana
On Jan. 30 at approximately 11:45 pm, P.O. Griffin and Cpl. S. Elig responded to a mv stop being conducted by Sgt. Fraser on Stanhope Road. Fraser advised that he stopped the gold Mercury Sable for being operated with no headlights on. Fraser further stated that when he approached the vehicle, he detected the odor of raw marijuana emanating from within the vehicle. Officer Griffin approached the vehicle to speak with the driver, 24 year old Johnathon Alkobi of Sparta, NJ, and confirmed the odor emanating from within the vehicle. Griffin advised Alkobi that he smelled marijuana and asked him if he had any marijuana in his vehicle. Alkobi stated that he had a little marijuana in his backpack on the passenger seat. A search of the backpack revealed a glass jar containing marijuana. Alkobi was placed under arrest and transported to Sparta Police HQ for processing. Alkobi was charged with: Poss. of Under 50Gr. of Marijuana and Poss. of CDS in a MV. He was additionally charged by Sgt. Fraser with driving with no headlights. Alkobi was advised of a mandatory court appearance and released.
Driver speeds and passenger gets arrested
On Feb. 1 at approximately 1:57 pm P.O. Thomas Snyder observed a silver Chevy Cruise travelling north on Rt. 15 at a high rate of speed, 76-55 mph zone. Snyder stopped and approached the vehicle and observed two occupants within the vehicle. He spoke with the driver, 22 year old Dalila DePaula of Ogdensburg, NJ, and requested her driver credentials. While speaking with DePaula and her passenger, 24 year old Ronald Artis of Rahway, NJ, he detected the odor of raw marijuana emanating from within the vehicle. Snyder returned to his patrol car and requested backup. Sgt. Carbery and Cpl. Rubino arrived to provide assistance. DePaula and Artis were asked to step out of the vehicle. When asked about the odor of marijuana in her vehicle, DePaula stated that some friends had smoked in her vehicle earlier, but that there was no marijuana in the vehicle presently. A search of the vehicle revealed a glass marijuana pipe containing marijuana residue and two open bottles of mango and peach vodka. Artis took ownership of the marijuana pipe and was placed under arrest and transported to Sparta Police HQ for processing. Artis was charged with Poss. of Drug Paraphernalia. DePaula was charged with: Speeding, Fail to Produce Ins. Card and Poss. of Open Containers in a MV. Both parties were advised of mandatory court appearances and released.
Unclear plate snags suspended driver with warrants
On Feb. 1 at approximately 1:05 pm Cpl. Marc Rubino stopped a black Honda Suv for an unclear license plate on Rt 15. The driver, 26 year old David Ajquejay-Pinzon of Plainfield, NJ was unable to produce his driver credentials. A DMV check on his name came back that his license was suspended and there were active warrants. Ajquejay-Pinzon was placed under arrest and transported to Sparta Police HQ for processing. There was a $66 warrant out of Long Branch, NJ and two warrants out of South Plainfield that totaled $953. Both agencies were contacted and each issued a new court. Ajquejay-Pinzon was issued m.v. summonses for: Driving While Suspended, Unlicensed Driver, Unclear Plate and Failure to Produce Documents. He was advisd of a mandatory court appearance and released.
Public alerts police to DWI driver
On Feb. 5 at approximately 1:47 am, Sparta Communications Center received a call from someone, following behind a red Mercedes on the Sparta Junction, that the vehicle was being operated erratically. Cpl. Kurt Morris responded to the area and observed the red Mercedes on the Sparta Junction. Morris stopped the vehicle and approached to speak with the driver, 36 year old Rebecca Hazekamp of Morristown, NJ. Officer Morris advised Hazekamp of the reason she was stopped and requested her documents. While speaking with Hazekamp, Officer Morris detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from within the vehicle. He further observed that Hazekamp’s eyes were watery and bloodshot and she slurred her words as she spoke. Due to the icy conditions on the road, Morris advised Hazekamp that he was going to transport her to Sparta Police HQ to conduct Field Sobriety tests to determine if she could safely operate her vehicle. At HQ, Morris conducted tests and placed Hazekamp under arrest for DWI. After conducting breath testing, Hazekamp was charged with: DWI, Careless Driving and Failure to Notify Change of Address. She was advised of a mandatory court appearance.
