Local athletes shine on college teams

Paige Boehmcke (Pope John High School), a senior for the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Maryland) women’s outdoor track and field program this past season had her team’s best time in the 1,500 run. Boehmcke posted that time (4:47.27) on April 14 at the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invitational in Baltimore.

Johns Hopkins won the team title at the Centennial Conference Championships in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Boehmcke was a member of the 4 by 800 team that placed first in Collegeville.

Let’s take a glance back at other student-athlete’s from the area who competed in collegiate sports this past spring season. This is the fifth installation in the series:

Jeff Andrews from Sparta High School was a freshman defender for the Lycoming College (Williamsport, Pennsylvania) men’s lacrosse team this spring. Andrew competed in four contests for the Warriors.

Lycoming had an overall record of 7-8 and they were 5-1 at home. In the Commonwealth Conference, they had a mark of 4-2.

Jeff Poshkus from Pope John High School was listed as a freshman for the Lycoming College men’s golf squad this spring.

As a sophomore for the Shippensburg University women’s lacrosse program, Kayla Dalzell (Pope John High School), listed as a Business Administration major, played in all 17 games. Dalzell scored 20 goals and tallied seven assists.

In team competition, Shippensburg had an overall record of 8-9, including a 5-3 mark on their home field. In the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the Raiders posted four victories.

Marissa Galante and Melissa Romero, both from Pope John High School, were on the roster for the Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) women’s track and field team this past season. Galante, a sophomore, was listed as a Political Science major. Romero, a junior, earned a place on the Patriot League Honor Roll with a semester grade point average of 3.43.

Caitlin Whelan from Pope John High School was a sophomore listed as a Social Sciences major for the Ursinus College (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) softball team this spring. Whelan played in 15 games and started in eight of them this past season. She had seven hits, six RBIs and scored four runs.

As a team, Ursinus had an overall record of 23-18 and they were 13-7 at home. In the Centennial Conference, they went 10-6.

Collin Sullivan (Sparta High School) was a freshman for the Ursinus College men’s lacrosse program this past season. Ursinus had a 6-9 overall record, including a 4-3 mark on their home field.
