William Anderson, financial literacy instructor at Sussex County Technical School, was named an Innovative Educator for September 2013.

Mr. Anderson has been at Sussex Tech for three years. In addition to using traditional resources to teach concepts like credit and debit management, saving, and civic financial responsibility, Anderson created an educational game called the “Wealth Effect.” The game simulates the financial life of a working adult responsible for typical expenses. He also teaches students about loans and investing utilizing a stock market challenge.

This year, Anderson started a new program with the SIFMA Foundation’s, The Stock Market Game, an online educational activity that teaches math, economics, saving and investing. He is dedicated to improving his students’ financial literacy. He says it is incredible to “see students grasp concepts, learn from mistakes and become better citizens for it.”

Visa Inc.’s Practical Money Skills recently named Anderson one of six recipients to receive a sponsorship to attend Jump$tart Coalition National Educator Conference in Washington D.C. in November. This is a three-day conference which is devoted specifically to PreK-12 classroom teachers of personal finance. It offers classroom educators an opportunity to see, learn about, and try educational resources that can be integrated into current lesson plans and to attend many informative workshops.
