Historical Society to have guest speaker

— The Sparta Historical Society will welcome Jeff Stoveken from Sussex County Excursions as guest speaker at their May 7th meeting.

Stoveken will share a visual tour of the county and surrounding area from a historical point of view.

The huge Edison Mine complex in Sparta closed in 1900. All that's left now are some foundations.

Stoveken hikes and bikes around Sussex county, photo-documenting its older buildings before we lose them.

"I actually started these then-and-now photos by accident. I take a lot of photos when I'm out around the county and started recognizing certain views in old photos and that I had taken the same views, so I started putting them together," he said.

Visit Stoveken's Facebook page for a sampling of what he will share. Google "Sussex County Excursions" for a quick link to his public page.

This event is at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, in the lower level of the Sparta Ambulance Building at 14 Sparta Avenue, Sparta.

Admission to this program is free to all members. Guests are invited to attend for $1 per student, $3 per adult.

For more information contact Program Chairman Marjorie Strohsahl at 973-729-5153.
