SPARTA — A weekend fire at a Lake Mohawk residence killed one man and left a firefighter injured, according to the Sparta Police Department.

Around 5:36 a.m., Saturday, multiple calls were made to police for the fire at the two-story home on Heighwood Trial.

When police arrived, the home was completely engulfed in flames and emergency personnel could not get in the home, according to a police department news release.

After firefighters battled the blaze for several hours they entered the home, and found the man's body on the first floor, according to the release.

His identity is not being released by police until the next of kin is notified. The victim was the sole occupant of the home, police said.

The body was taken to the Morris County Medical Examiner's Office.

Sparta firefighter Lt. Anthony Riehl, 37, suffered second-degree burns to his shoulder and back while he searched the home for victims. He was treated at St. Barnabas Hospital before being released.

Firefighters from Sparta, Andover and Ogdensburg responded to the fire, along with a Sparta First Aid squad and St. Clare's parademics.

The home was fully destroyed and a neighboring home had significant heat damage to the side of the structure.

The blaze remains under investigation by the Sparta Police Department, Sussex County Prosecutor's Office, New Jersey State Police and the Sussex County Fire Marshal.
