SPARTA TOWNSHIP CERT - COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM
Join the Sparta Township CERT Team and learn how to help yourself, your family and community before, during and after a disaster event.
Through involvement with the Sparta CERT, participants will become educated about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact the area. In addition, participants will learn basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations.
Under the direction of Police Chief Ernie Reigstad, Sparta OEM, the Sparta Township CERT will be activated and instructed accordingly after a township-wide emergency.
In order to become a certified member of the Sparta Township CERT, 22 hours of training, as outlined by FEMA, must be successfully completed. Training is scheduled and provided at no cost to new members through the township.
The next series of CERT training is scheduled to begin in the Fall. Participants must be registered to attend.
The Sparta CERT meets for several hours, once per month, to refresh skills and train on new topics. New members may begin attending monthly meetings before they complete the basic training course.
In addition to the CERT team, another volunteer opportunity is available to residents through the Sparta Township Public Safety Committee. In order to become a member, successful completion of a one hour, online training course is required.
To join either committee residents must complete and submit a volunteer application which can be found on the township website at www.spartanj.org.
