— The Sparta Middle School held a Walk-a-thon for Allergy Awareness Week on Friday, May 16 from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Wellness Committee along with the Physical Education Department helped to raise awareness of food allergies.

Lori Cresbaugh's physical education classes designed posters about different food allergies and posted them in the hallways for students and staff to read.

Physical education classes and volunteers donated to the F.A.R.E. nonprofit organization, which went towards food allergy research and education.

Food allergies is a growing public health concern. As many as 15 million people have food allergies.

Eight foods account for 90 percent of all food-allergic reactions, which are milk, eggs, peanuts, nuts, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish.

Throughout the day, students learned ways to be prepared for an allergy emergency if a friend has an allergic reaction.
