Thomas Hoff Prol, Esq., partner at Laddey, Clark & Ryan in Sparta, and president of the New Jersey State Bar Association was chosen as one of three finalists for the 2016 New Jersey Attorney of the Year by The New Jersey Law Journal. The Law Journal, the leading legal trade publication in New Jersey, made the selection from among the state’s 41,000 lawyers through a panel of legal experts, practitioners and editorial board members.

Prol, along with Matheu Nunn of Einhorn Harris Ascher Barbarito & Frost and Alexander Shalom of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey, will be honored at the Professional Excellence Awards Dinner on Tuesday, June 20, at the Brooklake Country Club, in Florham Park. The winner will be announced during the evening’s events.

“I am honored to be acknowledged as a finalist amongst such deserving individuals,” said Prol. “My selection represents the hard work of the many great lawyers and staff around me in the state bar association and at Laddey, Clark & Ryan, and I gratefully stand on their shoulders with this honor.”

Prol has served the State Bar Association extensively for over a decade and has been the spokesperson for New Jersey attorneys over the past year. Additionally, he has been a vocal advocate on civil rights issues, including passage of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, marriage equality and the New Jersey Anti-bullying Bill of Rights. He served as vice chairman and general counsel to Garden State Equality, a civil rights organization, where he remains active on the executive board.

During his tenure as a NJSBA trustee and officer, Prol represented the association before the New Jersey Supreme Court and Appellate Division, Third Circuit Court of Appeals, Council on Local Mandates and various legislative bodies while serving on numerous sections and committees. He was named the state’s “Young Lawyer of the Year” in 2004 and was also lauded as one of the “Magnificent Seven” New Jersey attorneys for the same year by New Jersey Lawyer newspaper.

Prol practices environmental, real property and local government law as well as business counseling and litigation. He has served as counsel to the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority since 2004 and is also the Franklin Borough municipal attorney, Andover Borough Planning Board attorney and Sussex County Special Counsel for environmental matters. Prol is a frequent lecturer for the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education and has served as an adjunct professor at both New York Law School and Rutgers University; he will be joining the adjunct faculty of Seton Hall University School of Law in the fall.
