SPARTA — On June 22, Troop 150 Scouts Adam B, Christian D, Robert H, Tyler H, Kaden K, Andreas O, Erich S, Thomas S, and their Scoutmaster, Mr. Fucito, participated in the Sparta Safety Village by conducting four sessions on hiking preparedness and safety.

This was one of four activity areas that the incoming kindergarten children attending at the Safety Village event were able to experience.

The kids were shown various items and ask if they should be part of their hiking gear and why or why not with the kids placing the items in the appropriate container.

Scout Kaden K played the role of the unprepared hiker to show the kids how not to dress for the weather.

Also part of the learning experience were safe hiking practice ideas, including: don’t hike alone; use the buddy system; for younger people, always hike with adults; bring and drink plenty of water.

The kindergarteners also learned what to do in case they were separated or otherwise lost while out walking or hiking – to stay calm and stay put – as the best way to be found.

The Sparta Safety Village is organized by the Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta.
