NEWTON — Family Promise of Sussex County to host Annual Fall Open House, October 2, 2017 from 4 to 6pm. The agency’s open house provides a platform for local businesses, agencies, and the community to gain further exposure to the invisible problem of family homelessness in the county. The growing need in the area has been in the forefront of many recent article publications in the local news, as the last point in time counts have the homeless populations found in Sussex County on the rise by 25 percent. Development Specialist Christine Nostray, explained how Family Promise of Sussex County is responding to the increased need.

“The need for emergency shelter services in the county right now is high. We are seeing an influx of young families who are experiencing a housing crisis and seeking help for a better future for their children. Family Promise of Sussex County has expanded programing and outreach programs providing an increase in help to those who need it most.”

Family Promise of Sussex County, a local non-profit, has been addressing the seemingly invisible issue of homelessness for 20 years. The agency located at 19 Church Street in Newton has an all-encompassing approach to helping clients in need of services through a day center with shower and laundry facilities, intensive case management programs, an Opening Doors: Men’s Day program, Emergency Shelter program, Homelessness Prevention, and Rapid Rehousing Program. Family Promise of Sussex County’s mission is helping families back on the road to stability and making a lasting difference in cases of multigenerational poverty, providing life skills training to make a sustainable change. The Emergency Shelter program unites churches and community organizations to help homeless families. Host locations provide meals, community support and overnight shelter for one-week durations on a rotating schedule. Families are transported to host locations and to the Agency Day Center for participants to engage in services and access shelter, laundry, and Career Center resources. Clients participate in weekly case management services, employment and housing searches, a savings program, and complete 30 hours of work activity each week.

The Open House will be held at the agency office in Newton. The delicious aroma of festive harvest fruits will welcome visitors to the Fall Harvest Open House. Attendees can come and meet the Staff, network with other agencies, and meet our Board Members who will be doing a tour of the day center.
