— New Mom-to-be Jackie Steglic of Sparta breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that her infant car seat was now safely secured in her vehicle, at Monday’s Child Car Seat Safety Day at Hilltop Country Day School.

The 2nd Annual Child Car Seat Safety Day on Aug. 6, open and free to the public, was a collaboration between The Fraser Firm Attorneys at Law LLC and Sparta Township Police. Hilltop Academy Country Day School hosted the event, offering tours of the school to any interested families.

In an effort to give back to the community, Lauren Fraser, owner of The Fraser Firm, chose this important initiative based on factual information she provided:

“According to a May 2015 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report, child restraint systems are often used incorrectly. An estimated 46% of car and booster seats (59% of car seats and 20% of booster seats) are misused in a way that could reduce their effectiveness. The American Academy of Pediatrics 2017 Report states that car seat use reduces the risk for death to infants (aged <1 year) by 71%; and to toddlers (aged 1–4 years) by 54% in passenger vehicles.”

“Knowing these statistics, we felt compelled to do something and to offer an opportunity for safer conditions for children in Sussex County,” Fraser said.

Jackie Stackhouse Leach, Health Educator & Child Passenger Safety Instructor at Morristown Medical Center, was on hand to share her experiise in car seat safety with Sparta police officers and parents.

Stackhouse Leach and Officers Kurt Morris, Steve Guido and Tom Herd joined forces in making sure safety seats were secured correctly and parents knew how to install them properly.

Steglic is expecting her first baby, a boy, in a few weeks and was most grateful to Stackhouse Leach and the officers. With the help of her sister Danielle Suarez, Steglic brought over both her cars.

“We are first-time parents, so it’s important that we learn about this and have both cars with secure seats,” she said. “And it’s great to have this available in Sparta where we live.”
