Sparta athletes make thier college marks

Dillon Mendel (Sparta High School), Zach Leach (Pope John XXIII High School) and Justin Provost (Pope John XXIII High School) were each members of the Rowan University (Glassboro, NJ) baseball team this year. Mendel, a junior infielder and team captain started in all 46 games for Rowan and led the squad with a .376 batting average. Mendel also led Rowan in hits (73), doubles (15) and triples (six). He had two homeruns, 40 RBIs and scored 39 runs as well.

Mendel was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Mid Atlantic First Team and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Honorable Mention. Mendel earned NJAC Baseball Player of the Week honors in April.

Leach, a sophomore catcher played in 21 games and started in 19 of them for Rowan. Leach had a .306 batting average with 15 hits, including two doubles. He also had seven RBIs and scored seven runs. Provost is on the roster as a freshman infielder.

The Profs had an overall record of 35-11 with a mark of 8-5 on their home field. In the NJAC they went 12-6. Rowan won the NJAC Championship Tournament held in Union with victories over Rutgers-Camden, Kean University and Ramapo College (twice).

From there, the Profs competed in the NCAA Mid Atlantic Regional where they went 2-2 with wins over Castleton University and Arcadia University and losses to Misericordia University and Virginia Wesleyan University.

Let’s take a glance at other local student-athletes who competed in collegiate sports this past spring season.

Adrianna Barone (Pope John XXIII High School) was on the roster as a sophomore outfielder for the DeSales University (Center Valley, Pa.) softball team this spring. Barone, listed as a Digital Art major played in 17 games and started in nine of them for DeSales. Barone had a .316 batting average with six hits, including two doubles. She also scored four runs.

The Bulldogs had an overall record of 14-16 with a mark of 5-5 at home. In the Metro Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Division they went 9-5. They advanced to the MAC Freedom Tournament held in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. where they were defeated by Misericordia University and King’s College.

Colin Phillips (Pope John XXIII High School) was a freshman who competed in throws for the Rowan University men’s track and field program. Rowan won the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships hosted by The College of New Jersey in Ewing. They also captured the team title at the All-Atlantic Track and Field Conference championships held in Brockport, New York.

The Profs finished in third place in the team scoring at the NCAA Division III Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
