NEWTON — The Second Annual “An evening with Sandra Joseph All-Stars” to benefit the SCARC Foundation will be held this Thursday, August 23, at Sussex County Community College at 7 pm. Some amazing performers will wow the audience, all in the name of benefiting this vital non-profit.
The incomparable Sandra Joseph starred as Christine Daae in the Broadway spectacular Phantom of the Opera for 10 years. Ron Bohmer starred in The Scarlet Pimpernel, in Les Miserables and in Fiddler on the Roof, before touring the US playing the phantom in The Phantom of the Opera and Joseph Smith in The Book of Mormon. Sally Wilfert started in Assassins, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, King David and toured with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Erick Buckley starred on Broadway and nationally in Dave, The Full Monty, Phantom of the Opera, Grease and in the national tour of Motown the Musical and The Addams Family.
Each year the SCARC Foundation hosts special benefit concerts in support of its mission and commitment to making a difference in the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.
“Attendees will enjoy a magical evening of Broadway hit songs performed by Broadway stars," said Chris Hemmer, of the SCARC Foundation, "Imagine enjoying Broadway without the hassle of going into New York City. The evening will again feature Sandra Joseph, who starred in The Phantom of the Opera for ten years, holding the record as the longest-running Broadway show of all time. Last year’s show was a smashing success, enjoyed by all who attended. This year’s show will bring a host of new tunes that will keep you captivated.”
“In 2014, Sandra Joseph first donated her time at the SCARC Foundation Honors Dinner when she did her presentation 'Your Creative Soul: Expressing Your Authentic Voice' in which she incorporated both discussion and song," said SCARC Foundation Board Member Dr. Heidi Weber. "It was both moving and heartfelt. At the end of this performance, my dad (the late Judge Frederic G. Weber) and I had the opportunity to speak with her. We discussed our love of Broadway, which my father had helped to cultivate in me. Sandra Joseph then talked about her relationship with her dad and how she was so thrilled to meet us. She said very poignant words to me regarding my dad stating 'Cherish every moment you have together. What a gift.'”
Dr. Weber added, “I am so impressed with her talent as well as her kindness and generosity. This upcoming performance at Sussex County Community College will be her fourth trip to Sussex County. I strongly encourage anyone to come out to support SCARC, as well as come hear a phenomenally talented artist, who is going to be accompanied by other singers."
Weber called SCARC "such an important organization, one that helps so many lives."
“In 2017 we had our first benefit concert and it was a great success. Everyone who attended thought it was an incredible evening of music and entertainment,” said Alice O'Rourke, development manager for the SCARC Foundation. “They could not believe that the concert was right here in Sussex County. We decided to try to make it an annual event with the help of Sandra and her contacts within the Broadway community.”
O'Rourke has worked for the SCARC Foundation for eight years. About six months ago she took a full time position as development manager and one of her duties is to oversee all fundraising events.
“In 2013, I met Sandra Joseph at a fundraiser and hired her to speak and perform at our 2014 Honors Awards Dinner,” O'Rourke said. “We have stayed in touch and she offered to do a benefit concert for SCARC because she was so impressed with the mission, staff and individuals whom we serve.”
She added, “SCARC provides so much to the community of individuals with developmental disabilities. Personally, without SCARC services and programs our family would be lost. I won’t move out of Sussex County because it would be too hard to replicate our son Ryan’s programs and services anywhere. I know the staff that works with Ryan and have complete confidence in their commitment and love of 'their guys and gals.' They go above and beyond to enrich the lives of all the individuals they work with and provide a safe and enriching experience.”
