    — On Thursday, May 4, at 7:00 p.m., NAMI Sussex and Saint Clare’s Intensive Family Support Services will co-host an inspiring presentation titled “In Our Own Voice.” This program was created by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to bring hope for recovery to those diagnosed with a mental illness, as well as to their family members and loved ones. The 90-minute presentation will be held at Bridgeway, 93 Stickles Pond Rd. in Newton.
“In Our Own Voice” combines a moving video with live personal testimony to describe the experience of recovering from serious mental illnesses such as major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and schizophrenia. The presentation covers issues frequently faced by people living with mental illness, including "dark days," denial, acceptance, treatment, coping strategies, successes, hopes and dreams.
Two local presenters who have succeeded in finding their personal roads to recovery will answer audience questions and provide information about peer support programs and professional treatment options. They will also speak frankly about the discrimination and stigma too often faced by people with mental health disorders.
The month of May is nationally recognized as Mental Health Month. NAMI Sussex and Saint Clare’s IFSS believe the “In Our Own Voice” program is a very effective program to raise awareness and fight stigma.
The program is free and open to the public. Advance registration through Eventbrite.com is requested but not required. For information or directions, contact NAMI Sussex at 973-214-0632 or email nami.sussex@gmail.com.
