SPARTA — Eleven Pope John XXIII Regional High School students recently scored 1400 or above on the SAT or 31 and above on the ACT, and 17 students have been recognized for achieving a perfect score on a particular section of either the SAT or ACT.

The students who eclipsed the 1400-plateau or the 31-mark on the exams that indicates college readiness were: seniors Sean Murphy, Rory O’Connor, Collin Roberts, Prajith Stephen, and juniors Dylan Bachrach, James Milano, Rohan Mukundhan, Emily Mundt, Natalie O’Hearn, Olivia O’Hearn and Ashley Potts.

These 11 students now give Pope John a total of 47 students who have scored 1400 or above on the SAT or 31 and above on the ACT this year.

As far as the perfect scores on a particular section, nine students achieved an 800 on the SAT I Math section. Those students were Jacklyn Healy, Jacob Huhn, Hongyue (Hong) Jin, Mukundhan, Matthew Rose, Qingyin (Viola) Tan, Zeyuan (Caesar) Zhan, and Renzhi Zhang. These students’ scores put them in the 99-plus percentile as far as students who completed the section of that test.

In addition, Pope John had four students score a perfect 36 on both the ACT English and ACT Reading sections. The four students who posted a 36 on the English section were Enam Akasreku, Sarah Brooks, Hailey O’Connor and Sydney Slepian. The four students who scored a 36 on the Reading section were Brooks, Healy, O’Connor and Slepian. These students’ scores put them in the 100th percentile as far as students who completed the sections of that test.

“I’m really happy and proud of our students,” Pope John XXIII Regional High School President Rev. Monsignor Kieran McHugh said. “They have used the gifts and abilities that God has given them. They’ve shared these gifts with us and we are so thrilled for their achievement. These scores will certainly open doors for any university across the country and allow them to succeed when they go to college.”

“It’s great to add these new students to this list,” Pope John Director of Curriculum Mr. Brian Vohden said. “Our students continue to succeed while they are here. We are so proud of their achievements.”

This is the second straight year that Pope John has had over 45 students post either a 1400 or above on the SAT or 31 and above on the ACT after having 49 last year.

Even prior to these two years, Pope John has had great success on these exams, especially on the SAT. From 2008-09 to 2016-17, Pope John has had 335 students score an equivalent to a 1400 or above on the new SAT, good for an average of 37 students per year during that nine-year span.

“This longevity of success is a reflection on our faculty and staff,” Vohden said. “They put a lot of time and effort into what they are doing in their classes and to make sure our students are succeeding on these standardized tests.”
