Bucco: Taxes on parking bad for New Jersey

Prior to Monday’s Assembly voting session, Assemblyman Anthony M. Bucco, the Republican conference leader, blasted a plan that would allow six cities to add an extra 3.5 parking percent surcharge:

“The Democrats continue to impose additional taxes on residents who are already being taxed to death. All of these taxes make New Jersey more unaffordable,” said Bucco (R-Morris). “It is going to hurt commuters and tourists who visit the cities. We can’t keep going back to the well. It’s death by a thousand cuts.”

The bill (A5070) would allow the new parking tax to be charged in any municipalities with a population of 100,000 or more: Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison and Woodbridge.

Some cities can already charge a 15 percent tax on parking and a 7 percent surcharge for special events. The new bill would allow some to add an extra 3.5 percent surcharge to pay for improvements to pedestrian access to mass-transit stations.
