Disability attorney 14th anniversary
Attorney Maryjean Ellis
Maryjean Ellis, a Sparta resident and disability attorney based in Newton, recently made a presentation to Social Security Disability/SSI lawyers from the Third Federal Circuit (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the Virgin Islands) in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania.
Ellis instructed her peers on the HITECH Act of 2009, which was enacted to allow patients to easily and inexpensively obtain copies of their medical records from doctors and hospitals that maintain records electronically.
“Many patients and their attorneys are unaware of HITECH and needlessly pay hundreds of dollars more for their medical records,” Ellis stated. The HITECH Act enhances HIPAA which gives patients strong privacy protections in their medical records.
Ellis is licensed to practice law in New Jersey, but is qualified to represent those seeking Social Security Disability/SSI throughout the country. She is celebrating the 14th anniversary of her practice. Prior to establishing her own office, she worked in a variety of legal settings. Ellis graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick with High Honors and Seton Hall University School of Law with Honors. She is a graduate of Pope John XXIII Regional High School.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to my community in my work assisting the disabled in collecting the insurance benefits they paid premiums for,” she said.
Ellis is a sustaining member of National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives (NOSSCR), and a member of the Sussex County Bar Association and the NJ Bar Association. She serves as a Member of the Mental Health Board of Sussex County.
