Looking for a great and wonderful way to kick off Mother's Day that's certainly unique? How about heading to the Sparta Police Athletic League (PAL) for a Mother/Daughter-Mother/Son Basketball Tournament?

That's exactly what Brian Thomas, of BT Basketball, is hosting on Sunday morning. Beginning at 9 am, teams will be placed in brackets and the games will begin in the context of a fun-spirited celebration of mother and child bonding.

“We have held a Father's Day Tournament for the past two years and it's been a huge success,” Thomas said. “So much so, that this year we are adding a Mother's Day Tournament.”

The tournaments are a great bonding experience for all involved at each age level.

“It's been great to watch fathers and sons/daughters work together on the court,” he said. “The joy and pride on the parents' faces is priceless. As much as they all want to win, being on the court together is clearly winning enough.”

The idea had its genesis from Thomas' own past.

“A few years back I was pondering what I was going to do with my own dad for Father's day that year,” he said. “It occurred to me how cool it would have been for me to have the chance when I was younger to compete with him in this type of atmosphere on such a special day. So I decided to give this opportunity to others.”

The Mother's Day Tournament is open to moms with kids in fourth grade through high school. Teams will be broken into proper divisions. Teams must register by Friday, May 10. E-mail to reserve a spot by Friday. Games will start at 9 a.m., and your specific time will be e-mailed to you on Saturday the 11th after all teams are properly assigned. The tournament will be held at the Sparta PAL, 38 Station Road, Sparta, and will the winner will be determined by the first to 15 points or the end of a 15 minute time period. Each team is guaranteed to play at least two games and cost is $65 per team.

The Father's Day Tournament will work in the same fashion and will be held on Sunday, June 16 with registration due by Friday, June 14.

“Due to the success of the Father's Day tourney, it became a fairly clear choice to include all the Mom's out there as well,” Thomas said. “We are excited to watch everyone compete and enjoy their time together. With the amount of time kids spend on devices in today's world, it's exciting to put them all down for a few hours and share a special experience that both parent and child alike can remember forever. It's this type of living in the moment that is harder and harder to come by.”

BT Basketball will offer summer camps, summer AAU, summer league and summer training. Registration is now available for both the Mother's Day and Father's Day tournaments as well as all of the summer programs at Find information on Facebook at BT Basketball.
