SPARTA — “Life Along the Wallkill” will open at the Sparta Historical Society’s Van Kirk Homestead Museum on Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 1 to 4 pm, with a 2 pm talk.
This spring exhibit encompasses the story of Sparta and its historic relationship to the Wallkill River. The exhibit illustrates the continuum of this relationship from the eighteenth into the twentieth centuries through artifacts, photographs, animal mounts pertaining to the natural environment, native inhabitants and settlers including the businesses, railroads, and industries that served the growing community.
The Sparta Historical Society and Van Kirk Homestead Museum are grateful for the many donors who have contributed to this history since the homestead opened in September 2014. Rare photos and artifacts comprise a large part of the exhibit, while most of the wildlife mounts have come from the Bruce Museum, Greenwich CT.
The Sparta Historical Society is located at The Van Kirk Homestead Museum at 336 Main Street (Rte. 517, use Middle School Driveway), Sparta. It will reopen Sunday, April 8 with our new Spring Exhibition on “Life Along the Wallkill” and will be open every second and fourth Sunday through June 24 from 1 to 4 pm with a 2 pm talk.
