Business, mums, and history

Summer's here, but in anticipation of a festive and prosperous autumn holiday season for local enterprises, the Sparta Historical Society is preparting for when it hosts a mum sale just for Sparta businesses. With the endorsement of the Sparta Economic Development Committee, the Sparta Historical Society would love to visually unite Sparta businesses for the fall season by gracing every service provider’s doorstep with bright, locally grown mums. Open to all businesses in Sparta, 12” yellow potted mums will be grown by our new neighbor, Sparta Nursery & Garden Center on Woodport Road, for this fundraiser. Each plant will boast a dose of local history. With the 175th Anniversary of the town coming in 2020, residents may brush up on all the interesting and fun facts about the town they call home.
Preorders will be taken for these mums which will be available for pickup in early October. Each plant will cost $30 of which $20 is tax deductible. Orders may be placed at the Sparta Historical Society’s website, www.vankirkmuseum.org where Visa, Mastercard and PayPal payments may be made. Checks made payable to Sparta Historical Society, and cash can be dropped off at Rose City Framemakers at 19 Main Street or call Economic Development Committee member, Nicole Francoeur at 973-660-0922 for pickup.
The Sparta Historical Society is located at The Van Kirk Homestead Museum at 336 Main Street (Rte. 517, use Middle School Driveway), Sparta. A treasured resource actively working to preserve Sparta History since 2002, the Historical Society is made up of concerned and dedicated residents and businesses focusing on the history, culture, natural resources and people who came before us.
