Old Newton Burial Tour

The Sussex County Historical Society announces that the 2019 Sussex County History Day and Old Newton Burial Ground Tour will be held at 11 am. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a rain date of Sunday, September 22. It will be held at the Sussex County Historical Society Event Field behind 75 and 79 Main Street, Newton, directly across the street from the Sussex County Historical Society Hill Museum. Come out and see the 27th Regiment of the New Jersey Volunteer Infantry encampment and the Long Hill String Band playing tunes of the Civil War era.

Historical Societies and Civic organizations will be set up to show their local history and talk Sussex County history. There is free parking available at the old McGuire parking lot on Main Street courtesy of Sussex County Community College.

The historical displays, Long Hill String Band and the New Jersey 27th Regiment Civil War encampment display are free. There is a charge to take the Old Newton Burial Ground tour. The tours consist of a guided tour with several stops where costumed interpreters will describe the lives of some of the residents of the Burial Ground. It is fascinating and educational. Each tour is limited to 20 people. Tour prices are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, Veterans and children 12-18 years old. One-hour tours begin at noon, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.. Proceeds from the tour will be used to upkeep the Burial Grounds.
