As e-Sports enter the collegiate arena, staying up until 2 a.m. to play video games may finally pay off after all, by landing students on one of Sussex County Community College's (SCCC) inaugural e-Sports teams. This semester, tech and gaming-minded players can tryout, train, and compete in national competitions.

“We are the newest college to offer varsity e-Sports, and only one of five schools in New Jersey to offer this,” said Josh Todd, an It Specialist and one of SCCC's e-Sports coaches.

e-Sports games Overwatch, League of Legends and Rocket League are being introduced this Fall with others available next Spring.

“Some positions require tryouts,” said Erin Casine, a Transfer Counselor and also an e-Sports coach. “We want to encourage any student to get involved however and plan to stream the games throughout the college.”

“This is the perfect opportunity to involve students, who would normally not go out for a sport, to get involved in campus life,” Todd said.

“Now students can play e-Sports here at our college and others and some are going on to do it professionally and earn money,” said Ketan Gandhi, Executive Vice President, Finance, Operations and CFO.

SCCC is now an official member of the National Association of Collegiate e-Sports (NACE).
