Sparta Books hosts author and pet adoption on Oct. 24

On Thursday, Oct. 24, Sparta Books will be hosting an event for Warwick-based author, Peggy Gavan for a reading and signing of her book, The Cat Men of Gotham. During the event, Eleventh Hour Rescue will be at Sparta Books hosting an adoption for cats and kittens looking for their furr-ever homes.

The story about firefighters, police officers, athletes, and politicians - takes place in 19th century New York City and how human population dealt with feline overpopulation. Most of these stray cats were gassed or thrown into the rivers; but these "Men of Gotham" took feline friends in and made them a part of their families.

There are 42 profiles contained in this literary work including heartwarming stories of Chinese stowaways wandering the Chelsea Piers, the sole feline survivor of the USS Maine explosion, and "tales of cats who went from alley cats to renowned sports team mascots, works of art by NYC artists, and even presidential pets.
