A local artist's fun and colorful New York City streetscapes will soon be on display at the George Segale Studios. Artist John Suchy was born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, but has been a resident of Sparta for the last 18 years.
He attended the School of Visual Arts & the Arts Students League in Manhattan, and worked for 15 years in the advertising business as a designer & illustrator. He began drawing scenes of Manhattan in 1964 and it remains his passion. His drawings and paintings of New York City, include popular landmarks & the people he met along the way.
In 1976 Suchy moved to the upper Westside of Manhattan & created drawings and etchings of the neighborhood. Displaying them at block parties, he received favorable reactions from neighbors and so began his art journey. This got him hooked on showing his art on New York City streets. In 1978 he displayed his work near the
Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue and met tourists from all around the world, who told him which city scenes they'd to bring home.
This information helped him complete a portfolio of many drawings enjoyed by and purchased by tourists.
He sold his artwork on the street for the next 12 years, when it was against the law to sell art on the street, and eventually worked his way into several Manhattan Art Galleries.
Such is now represented by the Central Park Gallery on 57th street in N.Y.C. He is represented & has had many shows in Germany over the past 10 years & is always working on new scenes of this country.
Now and then he enjoys driving into New York City and setting up his art on city sidewalks to do marketing and research via the candid reactions to his latest art and ideas. The exhibition at the Segale Studios, consist of his drawings, paintings, signed and numbered prints, abstract paintings, wood sculptures and nature scenes. They are done in many different mediums & styles. The show runs throughout July; Wednesdays-Saturdays 3-9 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The opening reception is at 6-10 p.m. on Friday, July 5.
The artist will be in the Gallery during exhibit times, daily in July. Visit the web site johnsuchy.com to find out more about Suchy's art journey and to view some of his work.
