Military veterans offered free wills

SPARTA — Askin & Hooker, LLC is sponsoring the first Wills for Warriors program in Sussex County. Eligible Sussex County veterans can receive a free will, helping them and their families plan effectively for the future.
The Wills for Warriors program will be held at the law offices of Askin & Hooker on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, 2016. The program offers Sussex County residents who are military veterans a pro bono (free) will.
For many veterans, the prospect of going through the estate planning process is an uncomfortable reminder of the dangers of their service abroad. However, if veterans or any other citizens do not have a will in place when they pass, the State of New Jersey dictates who is eligible to receive estate property, appoints guardians for children, and decides who can settle and administer the estate.
“We want our veterans to know that we support them. We appreciate and honor their service to this great country. Therefore, we want to help them take control of what happens to their children and property by preparing their will,” said Bill Askin of Askin and Hooker, LLC. "Even if your family members are aware of and supportive of your wishes, without a will, your estate could still be tied up in a lengthy probate process if you do not have a will in place."
The Wills for Warriors program sponsored by Askin & Hooker, LLC, is the only one of its kind in Sussex County. Those who are interested in participating need only provide proof of residency in Sussex County and proof of veteran status. It is easy to sign up for a time (by appointment only) to meet with Bill Askin and Todd Hooker on Veterans Day! “With all of the uncertainty and turmoil going on in the world today, we think it is important to protect those who protect us,” said Todd Hooker of Askin & Hooker, LLC. Todd is a veteran himself, having served in Kuwait during the first Gulf War.
