The Hanover Wind Symphony, which has as part of its mission to mentor the next generation of wind musicians, presented two world premiere pieces by young New Jersey composers as part of its “New Sounds & New Names” concert in February in Whippany.

The world premiere pieces were “The Sun Rises,” by Andrew Kadar, 19, of Sparta and “North” by Joseph Marta, 21, of Scotch Plains.

Kadar, a sophomore at Ithaca College pursuing a degree in music composition, is a student of the impressionist school of composition.

His work explores aesthetics, overall atmosphere and spatial surroundings.

As an instrumentalist, Kadar has received multiple awards for his work with the saxophone, including the Quincy Jones Musicianship Award and the John Philip Sousa Band Award.

To further his development as a composer, he is studying piano and pipe organ.

Marta, a junior at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University majoring in music composition, is a composer for band, choral and chamber music.

Besides composing music, he is an avid performer as principal trumpet for the Rutgers University Wind Ensemble and the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra and principal cornet for the Rutgers University Brass Band.

The 85-member Hanover Wind Symphony is an extension of the great American tradition of adult music performance. It is one of only a handful of community-based adult wind bands in New Jersey. The large orchestra is made up exclusively of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
