While the Lafayette Post Office is currently closed, the Postal Service is looking into a permanent solution for continuation of service in the township, USPS Spokesperson George B. Flood said.
According to Flood, the closure at the Lafayette facility is a temporary suspension, not a permanent closure.
"While no timetable has been set, we have begun the process of exploring all options for a permanent solution for the continuation of service in Lafayette," Flood said, in an email. "A community meeting will be held at a later date to discuss the options."
Operations at the shuttered location were suspended at close of business day Aug. 16, Flood said, due to concerns about the aging condition of the 1,118-square-foot leased facility.
The 144 Lafayette Post Office Box customers are picking up their mail at the nearby Augusta Post Office, located at 33 U.S. Highway 206, he said.
There was no effect on rural mail delivery service to street addresses.
Lafayette customers receiving a notice of attempted delivery of a package or mail piece requiring a signature at their street address, can call the phone number on the notice for re-delivery or pick-up their mail at the Augusta Post Office, Flood said.
Lafayette residents who need to conduct postal transactions may do so at the Augusta and Branchville locations, he said.
Retail business hours at the Augusta Post Office are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Retail business hours at the Branchville Post Office are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The USPS said customers with questions or comments about their mail service can call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) or send an email to the Postal Service by clicking on Contact Us on the bottom of the USPS.com homepage and following the prompts.
The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
The Lafayette Post Office is located at 96 State Route 15.
