DWI DRIVER STATES HE WAS JUST “CRUISING”
On 8/17/2019 at approximately 3:00 am, P.O. Brian Porter observed a black Volkswagen Jetta, travelling north on Rt. 15, at a very high speed, 98 mph in a 55 mph zone. Officer Porter stopped the vehicle and approached the driver, 31 yr old Evan Rokoszak of Morris Plains, NJ, and advised him why he was stopped.
Mr. Rokoszak stated that he knew why he was being stopped because he was“cruising”. Officer Porter detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from within the vehicle.
When asked about the odor, Mr. Rokoszak stated that he had “one beer, one White Claw and one shot of vodka. He was asked to perform some Field Sobriety tests and placed under arrest for DWI upon completion of the testing. Mr. Rokoszak was transported to Sparta Police HQ for processing. After completion of breath testing paperwork, Mr. Rokoszak stated that he had smoked marijuana, which usually sobers him up, prior to operating his vehicle, but he still believed that he would still be over the legal limit. He was charged with: DWI, Failure to Keep Right, Speeding, Reckless Driving and Windshield Obstruction. He was advised of a mandatory court appearance and released to a sober adult.
FALSE HIT AND RUN REPORT ENDS IN DRIVER’S ARREST
On 8/13/2019 at approximately 11:40 p.m., P.O. Taylor May responded to Main St., by the Sparta Middle School, for a report of a hit and run m.v. accident. Upon arrival at the scene, the driver, 21 yr old Jamie Lewis of Sparta, NJ, stated that an unknown tan colored sedan struck her black Ford SUV on the passenger side and continued travelling north on Main St. towards Ogdensburg.
After taking the report, Officer May surveyed the scene and could not locate any vehicle debris in the area where Ms. Lewis said the accident occurred. While checking the opposite side of the road, he discovered tire marks that went off of the roadway and into a telephone pole. There were vehicle parts that were consistent with Ms. Lewis’ vehicle striking the pole.
Ms. Lewis was contacted and asked to come to HQ. Once at HQ, she was read her Miranda Rights and asked if she wanted to talk about what really occurred. Ms. Lewis stated that there was no other vehicle involved in the accident and that she veered off the road and struck the telephone pole.
Ms. Lewis was charged with: Making a False Report to Law Enforcement, Careless Driving and Failing to Maintain Lane. She was processed and advised of a mandatory court appearance before being released.
HUMMER FAILS TO MAINTAIN ITS’ LANE
On 8/16/2019 at approximately 11:45 p.m., P.O. Michael Poon observed a black Hummer, travelling on Woodport Rd, that could not maintain its’ lane. A check of the vehicle’s registration revealed that the vehicle was unregistered. Upon stopping the vehicle and approaching the driver, 47 yr old Sandra Dennis of Nutley, NJ, Officer Poon determined that Ms. Dennis had been consuming alcoholic beverages. She was asked to step out of her vehicle to perform Field Sobriety tests. Upon completion of the tests, Ms. Dennis was placed under arrest for DWI and transported to Sparta Police HQ for processing.
After breath testing was completed, Ms. Dennis was charged with: DWI, Careless Driving, Unregistered Vehicle, Failure to Maintain Lane, Driving While Suspended and Maintenance of Lamps. She was advised of a mandatory court appearance and released to a sober adult.
