Sparta Police: Intoxicated driver strikes stopped school bus

    Police found a child with a wrist injury and a bus driver with back pain when they arrived at Lafayette Road where police say an intoxicated driver struck a parked school bus at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

    The 7-year-old child fell when the bus was struck, and injured his wrist," Sparta Police Lt. John Lamon stated.

    The driver and the child were treated at the scene and each decided to go see their own doctors, Sparta Police said.

    The black Honda was driven by Rita McCormick, 60, of Sparta, and had extensive damage and had to be towed from the scene. The bus was able to be driven from the scene.

    Sparta Polilce Cpl. Joe Antonello spoke with Mrs. McCormick about the accident and determined that she had been consuming alcoholic beverages prior to the accident.

    McCormick was administered Field Sobriety tests and placed under arrest for DWI. She was transported to Sparta Police Headquarters for processing. Upon completion of breath testing, she was charged with: DWI, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving and two counts of Assault By Auto. She was advised of a mandatory court appearance and released to a sober adult.
