Richard Konopka Jr. of Hackettstown, N.J., was charged with driving while intoxicated, tailgaiting, failure to keep right and careless driving after police responded to a report that a black Honda Civic was passing other vehicles over the double yellow on Route 517 South.
Patrol was unable to close distance on the vehicle, but called ahead to Sparta to advise that the vehicle was entering Sparta on Rt 517 south. Officer Brian Porter observed the black Honda pass him at west mountain Rd and got the vehicle stopped on the Sparta junction. Porter approached the vehicle and met with the driver, and determined that Konopka had been consuming alcoholic beverages. Konopka was asked to perform Field Sobriety tests and was placed under arrest after completion of the tests. He was transported to Sparta Police HQ for processing.
He was released to a sober adult and advised of a mandatory court appearance. Vehicle was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour period.
Fernando Clavijo, 37, of Levittown, N.Y., was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and unsafe lane change at about 2 a.m. on Route 15.
Officer Brian Porter was travelling north and observed a white Honda Accord, ahead of him that made an unsafe lane change. Porter stopped the vehicle and approached it and observed two occupants in the vehicle. He spoke with the driver, Clavijo , and immediately smelled the odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle. Porter asked Clavijo about the odor and he stated that he did some marijuana in the vehicle. He retrieved a plastic and a glass jar containing marijuana and handed them to Porter. A further search of the vehicle yielded a metal marijuana grinder.
He was advised of a mandatory court appearance and released.
