2 lacrosse players score 100th goals

Senior attack Leah Moore reached a huge milestone Tuesday, April 11 when she scored her 100th career goal.

She charged for four goals and an assist to help propel the Sparta High School girls lacrosse team to an 18-5 victory over Mount Olive there.

Moore now has 100 goals in three seasons of play. She scored 38 goals as a sophomore, 50 goals last year and 12 goals this spring.

Teammate Uma Kowalski finished the game with six goals, an assist, four ground balls, four draw controls and two forced turnovers, and Aine Byrne also had six goals along with four assists and five draw controls.

Kowalski, a sophomore, has 26 goals this spring and reached the 100-goal milestone herself April 8 during a five-goal effort in an 10-8 victory over Kinnelon.

She now has 113 goals for her career after totaling 87 goals and 31 assists as a freshman.

Sparta (4-1), which lost for the first time in a 17-4 setback at Randolph on April 13, was scheduled to play host to Morris Knolls at 4 p.m. Friday, April 21.

Here is how the other Sparta sports teams fared last week:

Baseball

Sparta improved to 4-2 this spring with a dominant 8-1 decision over Lenape Valley at home Saturday afternoon, April 15.

Tanner Blendinger went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI; Henri Coleman was 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run; Jake Hand was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs; and Braden Schappert added two singles, two stolen bases and two runs for the Spartans, who led, 6-1, after three innings.

Hand scattered four hits and three walks over the first five innings while striking out four before giving way to Charlie Sandgran, who pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit.

Sparta was scheduled to play at Morris Hills at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 20.

Softball

Gabrielle Heim hurled a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and two walks; Alexa Berry was 4-for-4 with three RBI; Mason Munier went 4-for-5 with a home run and three runs; Rylee Munier was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs; and Carly List was 3-for-4 with two runs to power Sparta to an 8-0 victory over Parsippany there Thursday, April 13.

The win was the fourth in the past five games for Sparta, which improved to 4-2.

The Spartans were scheduled to play at North Warren at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22.

Boys lacrosse

Ryan Rossi totaled five goals and two assists; Matt Ciarelli added two goals, four assists and five ground balls; Kurtis Cina had a goal, an assist and four ground balls; and Jeremy Schon connected for two scores to lift Sparta to a 13-7 decision on April 12 in Montville.

Adam Teixeira (four ground balls, won 10-of-20 face-offs), Greg Peters (11 ground balls), Troy Christiano (one goal), Mason Lindsay (one goal), Hunter Takacs (one goal) and Joe Buono (17 saves) also contributed to the victory.

Sparta (4-1) was next scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25 at home against West Morris.

Boys tennis

The Spartans had their most complete effort of the season as they defeated Pope John, 5-0, on Friday, April 14 at home.

Thomas Schottland (first singles), Robert Matkiwsky (second singles), Graham Mahoney and Liam Thomas (first doubles), and Aidan Mahoney and Charles Canzoniero (second doubles) each won in straight sets, while Ian Yip (third singles) won by forfeit.

Sparta (2-3) will play host to Montville at 4 p.m. April 20.
