Girls soccer team in H/W/S quarterfinals

SPARTA. The high school team is top-seeded in the tri-county tournament.

Uma Kowalski scored twice as the Sparta High School girls soccer team, ranked 10th in the state, snapped its only losing streak of the season with a 4-2 decision over Mendham there Oct. 4.

Abigail Rodek and Abigail Connors also connected for goals, with Juliana Dolinski assisting twice. Goalies Riley Molbury (five saves) and Sam Vasquez (one assist) anchored the Spartans’ defense.

Dolinski, a senior, leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and five assists.

Sparta (7-2) is top-seeded for the 13th annual Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament and received a bye into the quarterfinal round. The Spartans will play host to eighth-seeded Belvidere or ninth-seeded Phillipsburg on Friday, Oct. 13.

Sparta, which has never won a tri-county crown, reached the H/W/S tournament finals last year, bowing to Hunterdon Central, 1-0.

Boys soccer

Andy Parreno scored the game-winning goal off a pass from Kyle Enderle in the second overtime period to lift Sparta to a 1-0 victory over Pope John at home Oct. 4.

Enderle also assisted Quint Flannery on a second-half goal for Sparta, which received five saves from Evan Miller.

Sparta (5-5) was seeded fifth for the H/W/S Tournament and was scheduled to host a second-round game Wednesday, Oct. 11.

Field hockey

The Spartans, seeded fourth, surrendered a goal in the final period and lost, 1-0, to 13th-seeded Kittatinny in the second round of the H/W/S Tournament at home Oct. 3.

Sophia Candeloro (seven goals, five assists), Madison Campisi (six goals, three assists), Eliana Intorella (five goals, one assist) and Kailyn Moughrabie (four goals, two assists) lead the squad in scoring.

Sparta (8-3) is scheduled to play at Mount Olive at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.

Girls tennis

Sparta, seeded 10th, battled but dropped a 3-2 decision to seventh-seeded Mahwah in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 tournament there Thursday, Oct. 5.

Julia Miller at second singles and Emily Dondero at third singles each won in straight sets for Sparta (2-6).

Girls volleyball

Sparta, ranked No. 8 in the state, earned a 25-16, 25-20 decision over Bergen Tech on Oct. 5 in Hackensack

The Spartans (14-0) were led by Giselle Faria (nine assists, five service points), Lea Tsamadias (seven kills, six service points, two aces, one dig), Sylvia Przydzial (three kills, one block), Aralyn Saulys (13 assists, seven kills, eight service points, four aces, one dig), Payton Simpson (four digs, six service points, one kill), Haley Maher (13 digs, four service points, three assists), Tara Keller (eight kills, two blocks, one assist) and Emma Kristiansen (one block).

Sparta is scheduled to play host to Pope John at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12.
