More than two hundred people gathered at the high school on Monday night, Aug 26, for the official opening of Cassels field, with its freshly-laid turf shining under new lighting. Sparta athletes cut the ribbon with over sized scissors.

“This is the culmination of a lot of hard work,” Superintendent Dr. Michael Rossi said. “We’ve got new lights, new A/V, new bleachers, new everything...now let’s all check it out.”

Amid cheers, people flooded onto the field to admire the new features, including a state-of-the-art video scoreboard. Sparta Mayor Molly Whilesmith celebrated too.

“Congratulations to the school for getting this project done, and on time,” she said. “I’m looking forward to having our kids enjoy it and to welcoming other schools here to use these new amenities.”

The turf field was built with approximately $3.5 million of capital reserve funds. The field has large enough dimensions to be used for various sports. Dr. Rossi was pleased that the field was finished in time for the football team’s first home game on Sept. 13.

“I’m so thrilled to be able to offer this complex to our student athletes, marching band, and community at large,” Rossi said.
