Grills were the focus at the 2012 Champion of the Grill Classic Car Show on Sept. 16, where classic cars and barbecue food were featured.
Celebrating its 10th year, family event — organized by the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce — took place at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta and lasted for five hours beginning at noon.
The entire affair was a feast for the eyes, nose and tongue as the fairgrounds were smokin' with barbecue chicken, pulled pork, sausages and more. Car and food enthusiasts got to see some amazing rides and barbecue skills on display.
A local music group called Lefty and the Tall Boys based in Sussex County entertained the crowd with music.
The grilling competitors were Texas Smoke Barbecue of Jefferson Township, Knights of Columbus of Ogdensburg, Bentley Assisted Living of Branchville, Eastern Propane based in Oak Ridge, Young Professionals of Sussex County, All Sauced Up from Sussex County Technical School, The Sussex County Wellness Committee, Gimp Dog Barbecue and the Sussex County YMCA.
Each grill team and car owner had a chance to win in a series of categories, where a panel of judges and visitors voted for their favorite.
This years Classic Car Show People's Choice Award was awarded to Jim Van Genderen of Bloomingdale for his 1959 midnight blue MG A coupe. The Classic Car Show overall first place winner was a 1968 Chevy Camero SS owned by Glenn and Wendy Mulligan of Pocono Pines, Penn.
For the first time ever there was a motorcycle category added to the Champion of the Grill Classic Car Show. Hamburg resident Glenn Keller's 1996 Harley Davidson Fatboy won Best in Show in the motorcycle category.
The Texas Smoke Barbecue team 'smoked' the competition in the grilling contest. The Jefferson Township based establishment won the Peoples Choice Award and was named the 2012 Grand Champion of the Grill, taking top honors in the professional category for best beef, chicken, ribs and pork.
According to Sussex County Chamber of Commerce President Tammie Horsfield, Texas Smoke Barbecue had won in a few categories in 2011 but this year in her words "they cleaned house."
The Knights of Columbus of Ogdensburg won the top spot in the Amateur Division. They also won in the Healthy Grilling Category.
