NEWTON-Dave Hollander, Newton High School graduate and author of a new book, 52 WEEKS: Interviews with Champions! (Lyons Press, $16.95) will soon return to Sussex County for a series of local book signings. The book is a collection of 52 interviews with famous sports figures — and also includes memoirs of Hollander’s own sports experiences. “I come from a family of standout athletes,” he recalled recently. “My sister Liz received all-state recognition in three-sports at Newton (1981-85) and was inducted into the Sussex County Sports Hall of Fame last November. “My brother Andy is the second leading scorer in Newton High School’s boys basketball history (1975-79),” he continued. “My brother Joe was an all-area tennis phenom (1973-77). My father was an all-state football player for Newton in 1949 and played in the North Jersey Semi-Professional Football League from 1954-56.” Alas, his own record is not as stellar as those of other family members. The 1983 Newton graduate claims the dubious distinction of holding the single-season and career record for technical fouls. Although he “never made anyone’s all-star team,” Hollander says, “many of the stories in my book are about teams I played on, the teammates I played with, and my family members ...I think my friends, coaches and teachers in Sussex County will delight in reading how they play main characters in the stories that made my sports life growing up in Newton so rich and memorable.” 52 WEEKS has received excellent advance reviews from The New York Times, SportsIllustrated.com, WFAN radio and former U.S. Sen. Bill Bradley.
