SPARTA-The third graders at Helen Morgan School have been participating in the ShopRite Young Consumer Program since October. Their recent trip to ShopRite in Byram was the final phase of the program, which was designed to enhance the students' math, language arts, and critical thinking skills. Cathie Filomeno, Consumer Affairs Coordinator for Ronetco ShopRite, worked with the third grade teachers to coordinate the program. As part of the curriculum, third graders study nutrition and how it affects all the systems of the human body. Students worked in teams of two or three to prepare a menu and purchase nutritious foods to feed a family of four for four days with $100. During their visit to the store they shopped for items on their lists and stopped at ten problem-solving stations set up around the store. Classroom parents acted as chaperones for the teams as they shopped. The store was be open for business while students worked.
