Closing reception for all-woman art show

NEWTON — Saturday Nov. 12, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. is the closing reception for the All-Women Art Show at the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council in Newton. As the title implies, women created all the artwork in the show, and all mediums were eligible. However, to coincide with the council’s showing of New Harmonies, a Smithsonian Institution exhibition exploring the history of American music, all works of the art accepted for exhibition had to include a music theme. There are four featured artists: Lisa Hirkaler is showing painting and ceramic figures of African women dancing; Leah Morgan Korbel uses light, line, and color to infuse spirit into her photos of musical instruments; Susan Scarince Jones is showing lively abstractions based on musical shapes, and you can almost feel the bass in Joyce Ellen Weinstein’s large charcoal drawings of heavy metal performers. Linocut, collage, watercolors, and mixed-media are also being shown. In addition, artists whose artwork was shown in the Photos with a Beat show are similarly being highlighted at this reception. That October show was open to all photographers, but again the artwork had to be music-themed. Trevor Hodgson was the featured artist and showed exquisite shots of musicians performing at local venues. From Nov. 19 to Jan. 7, 2012, the council will be hosting Art is a Gift, a holiday exhibit and sale of small, affordable, original art. The opening reception is Saturday Dec. 3 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The council’s gallery is located at 133 Spring Street, Newton. Gallery hours are Tuesday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about these and other events, to become a member, or to exhibit your artwork, visit www.scahc.org or call 973-383-0027.
