Exploring the headwaters of the Musconetcong
LAKE HOPATCONG — The Musconetcong Watershed Association will run a paddling trip on Lake Hopatcong, Oct. 13, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the Exploring the Headwaters of the Musconetcong event.
Paddlers will depart from the MarineMax Marina on the northeast shore of Lake Hopatcong.
The group will explore the Venice Section of the lake which is a series of canals running from Lake Hopatcong up to Lake Shawnee and the northern reaches of the Musconetcong Watershed.
Until the 1940’s this area was known as Hurd Brook, but in the 1950’s a series of canals were dug with residences constructed along the shore lines.
In addition, there is a large tract of undeveloped area along the canals that is home to a number of species of wildlife, including bears, beaver, otters, marine life, amphibians and birds.
This will be an approximately two hour tour for all levels of paddlers.
Participants must supply their own boat and wear a life jacket. Paddlers are encouraged to bring drinking water, a waterproofed lunch or snack and binoculars. Participants must sign a liability release. Space is limited. Donation is $15 for non-members and $10 for MWA members.
MarineMax Marina is located at 134 Espanong Road in Lake Hopatcong.
