Local band spearheads Katrina benefit concert

NEWTON-Contributing their time and talent, Lucid, a local rock band, is spearheading a five-hour concert for the benefit of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The concert, called Kash for Katrina, will take place from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., Sept. 30, at Sussex County Community College's lower campus outdoor Lakeland Bank Pavilion. Proceeds will go directly to the Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross, who will have a representative at the event. It will be broadcast on Service Electric Cable TV at Channel 20, EDTV. Bobby Casteel and Nick Vancott, members of Lucid and students at the college, were moved to do something to help raise funds for the Gulf Coast residents and solicited the help of Heidi Gregg, director of student activities, at SCCC. She said she was approached by several groups interested in putting together a fundraiser for the hurricane victims, and the concert is now the collaborative effort of the bands, the broadcasting club, and the Student Government Association. Casteel said the concert is the least he can do to help, especially since his dad, Sparta police officer, Det. Sgt. Ron Casteel is one of the volunteers now in New Orleans assisting with law enforcement in the region. Lucid will be joined by Jessica and the Red House Rockers from Blairstown, Mayflower Blueprint, Screams from the Burn Unit, an experimental/progressive rock group, and Quarter-inch Fuse of Wantage. Admission, $10. Light refreshments will be available.
