Route 206 crackdown

SUSSEX COUNTY-From July 11 through July 24 the Newton, Andover and Byram Township Police Departments will be simultaneously targeting aggressive driving offenses. The crackdown is the result of a New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety grant received from a application submitted by Patroilman Dean Coppolella of the Newton Police Department Traffic Section. The three departments along 12 miles of the Route 206 corridor were awarded a grant of $12,000 to cover the overtime costs of scheduling daily supplemental patrols on the highway. The patrols in the three towns will be on duty at the same times every day, and will focus on stopping and issuing summonses to motorists demonstrating aggressive behavior, including speeding, disregarding traffic signals, making illegal turns, careless driving, driver inattention, cell phone usage, unsafe lane changes, and following too closely. The project goal is to saturate the highway with strict enforcement and ultimately improve traffic safety on the Route 206 corridor.
