HARDYSTON n The Sussex County YMCA will begin hosting monthly Senior Days from 9:30 a.m. n 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month, starting Oct. 12. These days will highlight activities designed especially for older adults and introduce this age group to all the ways they can get involved with the Sussex County YMCA and their community. Each Senior Day will feature activities such as nutrition and health seminars, water aerobics and fitness classes, in addition to refreshments and lunch. “Older Americans are a vital segment of society and play an important role in our families and communities,” said Joanne Browne, Program Director at the Sussex County YMCA. “We want to bring them together and encourage older adults of all fitness levels to explore some of the YMCA Older Adult Programs so they can get fit, stay fit and stay involved.” The Sussex County YMCA offers a number of programs and fitness classes designed specifically for older adults, including Arthritis Aquatic Exercise, Senior Fit & Swim, Arthritis Self-Management Courses, and much more. These programs are consistent with findings in the U.S Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health, which reports that older adults obtain significant health benefits with a moderate amount of physical exercise. “The Sussex County YMCA strives to create a year-round atmosphere of caring and support for older adults”, added Browne. “Here at the Y we are not only concerned with health and fitness, but the overall well-being of all individuals. In June we had a great turnout at our National Active Older Adult Celebration and we hope to build on that success.” To learn more about Senior Days at the Sussex County YMCA or to register for this event, call Browne at 973 209-9622, ext. 209.
