WANTAGE-No mirrors, no men, no kidding is the motto of Pick Up The Pace a new women's fitness center located in the Wantage Plaza on Route 23. Owned and operated by Wantage resident Kimberly Prendergast, Pick Up The Pace is looking to attract women who want to get off the couch, but who may feel a little intimidated by the thought of going to a big impersonal gym. "My own struggle and experience with maintaining weight and fitness goals gave me the motivation to bring a facility like this to the ordinary average woman," Predergast said. "We offer a 30-minute cardiovascular and strength training program in a friendly positive and non-intimidating environment. Its real women getting real results." The fact that there are no mirrors and no male members seems to be a big incentive to many women like Lynda Snyder of Newton who have signed up at Pick Up The Pace. There also are no free weights, just circuit-training stations. "I have multiple sclerosis, so exercise helps me in a number of different ways," Snyder said. "It helps to make me stronger and it helps me relieve stress. I don't like to exercise in front of men so I feel very relaxed here." Pick Up The Pace has a flexible schedule with no class times, which means that patrons can never be late and never have an excuse not to go. "Offering a children's waiting area and hours that can accommodate most working women as well as stay at home moms, I was able to eliminate many of the reasons why women including myself, neglect their own health," said Prendergast. Also available at Pick up the Pace is "Infrared Body Wrap" which is advertised as an effective weight loss control, inch loss, pain management, cellular detoxification and physical therapy system that is fast and easy. The program's literature claims that the infrared heat penetrates twice as deep as other heat sources to get at toxins and cellulite trapped in pockets below the surface of the skin. Pick Up The Pace offers three-, six- and 12-month memberships and is offering free registration and a one-week free trial membership with no obligations. The work-out facility is open for business Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. For more information, call 973-875-2992 or visit letspickupthepace.com
