Chess Club kicks off 18th season

There are Chess groups in each of Sparta's schools. Sparta Middle School will meet on Tuesdays after school in Room 271. Alpine School will meet on Wednesday mornings in the All Purpose Room at 8 a.m.. Sparta High School meets Wednesday after school in the MRC. Helen Morgan meets Thursday in the library after school and Mohawk Avenue School meets Friday after school in the auditorium. Sparta Chess participates in many local events including the New Jersey State Championships.

The club will have an opening day of fun on the Lake Mohawk Boardwalk with the giant chess set and pizza on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019 to celebrate National Chess Day. The group will also travel to Baltimore, Columbus, and Jacksonville to play in National events this school year. The Sparta team have won many New Jersey and Regional Championships, including two New JErsey Kindergarten Championships. The team has visited 17 states. Chess develops critical thinking and logic skills and promotes increased reasoning ability.
