Woman, 96, dies from injuries

NEWTON. Marcos Travis was struck by a vehicle while crossing Madison Street in a marked crosswalk, police say.

Marcos Travis of Newton died of her injuries after she was struck by a vehicle while crossing Madison Street in a marked crosswalk June 27. She was 96.

About 11 a.m. that day, the Newton Police Department received a 9-1-1 call about an accident. A preliminary investigation showed that Hunter Grave de Peralta, 25, of Newton was traveling south on Madison after turning left from Elm Street. His vehicle struck Travis, police said.

She was taken to Newton Medical Center and later was pronounced dead.

Grave de Peralta was issued a motor vehicle summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The accident is being investigated by the Newton Police Department in cooperation with the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and Sussex County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team.
