Sparta High School Class of '08 graduate is star bowler and tenor

Music and bowling always have been part of Peter Colasurdo’s life, he said. The 2008 Sparta High School graduate is an accomplished tenor and a bowler as well. Colasurdo started bowling when he was 5 years old. “Once I got to high school, I wanted to be more serious with it,” he said. He was on the Sparta High School junior varsity team as a freshman; he played varsity for the next three years. For two years, he was a member of Sparta’s champion SCIL team. Colasurdo also earned several individual awards for his bowling achievements. This year he was recognized as his team’s Most Valuable Player; last year he was the “Most Improved. At the Sectional Championships, at which more than 30 teams competed, he won the High Series Award for the top performance among all participants. He was designated All-SCIL First Team for two years, and this year his performance pulled in Third Team All- State honors. Colasurdo also has received considerable attention for his musical talents. He performed with the All State Choir and the All County Choir and was a member of the All Eastern Choir, which is open to only a few hundred top high school singers in the Northeast. Sparta High School enjoyed Colasurdo’s musical talents. He sang in the school’s select choir and played trumpet in the concert band, the jazz band and the marching band. He credits Krystal Rickard, his high school choir director, with urging him to try out for the various regional choirs. Music, Colasurdo said, runs in his family: his mother, Joanne, participated in several choirs; his father, Modesto, and siblings also have musical backgrounds. Colasurdo enjoys his large family. “There are always a lot of people there to support me,” he said. They will be there for his future, too. In the fall, Colasurdo will attend Sussex County Community College, where he plans to major in criminal justice. He hopes to transfer to a four-year program after two years. He plans on a career in the federal government, ideally as an air marshal. To that end, Colasurdo is considering entering the National Guard. “I just feel like helping the community,” he said. “I’m excited for what’s to come.”
