Troop 150 Scout earns rank of Eagle

SPARTA — A special Court of Honor was held by Troop 150 on Sunday, Sept. 16 to award the rank of Eagle Scout to 15-year-old Julian Buttitta.

Julian is the son of Monica and Cosmo Buttitta and he is a sophomore at Sparta High School.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Boy Scouting and takes many years of hard work. Only about 5 percent of all Boy Scouts become Eagle Scouts. To earn the rank of Eagle a scout must show leadership, service, outdoor skills, citizenship, character and personal fitness by earning at least 21 merit badges and he must complete a special community service project.

Julian’s Eagle Project consisted of building and installing four benches along the walking/running track at White Lake Soccer Field. The project took a total of 243 hours.

Julian earned a total of 31 merit badges, his favorite merit badge being small boat sailing.

He has held several positions of responsibility in Troop 150: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Quartermaster and Photo Historian.

Julian plans to remain active in Boy Scouts until he is 18 and then would like to then become an adult leader.

In addition to scouting, Julian is also involved in the youth group at the First Presbyterian Church and is in the Sparta High School Marching Band.

Sparta Troop 150 serves Sparta and surrounding communities meeting 7 p.m. on Monday nights at the Sparta United Methodist Church. All interested boys between the ages of 11 and 18 are welcome. For more information, visit www.spartatroop150.org
