Winners named in art council's student awards

    Sussex COUNTY — The Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council recently presented the senior student arts awards to high school seniors in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the arts. Members of the arts faculty in county high schools nominated seniors in each of 10 categories. In addition, county dance studios may nominate graduating seniors for the award in dance. Winners are: High Point Regional High School Crafts, Laura Moser; creative writing, Amy Sysyn; dance, Joanna Nieuwdorp; drama, Cody Riker; fine arts, MeganVanGlahn; instrumental music, Sara Lindsay; photography/video, Daniel Graham; technical theater, Matthew Miller, vocal music, Catherine Kedala. Pope John XXIII High School Crafts, Julia R. Boyer; Leighann Lorenzetti and Emily Quirk, dance; drama, George DeJesus; fine arts, Meredith Cahill; instrumental music , Eric Yu; photography/video, Jennifer Friend; technical theater, Alexander Warner; technical theater, Matthew Ackerman; vocal music, Carl Pariso Sussex County Technical School Creative writing, Tara Mahady; culinary arts, Amanda C. Katherine McCole of High Point Regional received the Barbara and Ben Jones Teen Arts Scholarship, and Julia R. Boyer of Pope John XXIII Regional High School received the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council Art Scholarship. While awards have been given since 1976, the council began presenting the Arts in Education Recognition Award for outstanding contributions to the quality of arts education in Sussex County in 1988. This year’s recipient was Beth Delaney. Chairperson Maureen Hanifan worked with Sussex County Teen Arts Program Coordinator Stella Trikouros and assistant Donna Kurkjian to coordinate the event, which also included a ballet performance by Shaina Wire, a video by Danny Graham, music by the Vernon Township High School String Quartet, a dance performance by Dance Expression, and the presentation of scholarships. Hanifan, Trikouros, and Mary Jo Mathias, executive director of the SCAandHC, presented the awards. Mathias and Dr. Paul Mazur, president of Sussex County Community College, presided over the event.
