SPARTA - The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs 10th District, comprised of 28 individual organizations, held its Spring Conference, Achievement Day and Flower Show on April 7 to review the year's activities and recognize outstanding achievement. Sparta Woman's Club President Marjorie Strohsahl accepted numerous awards on behalf of the SWC. Six of the SWC entries in district competition in achievement, flower creations, art and crafts captured Gold Ribbon status, rising above the Blue Ribbon First Place status. This highest honor catapults these entries into state competition this month. Recipients of the honored Gold include entries in advanced knitting, watercolor painting, and professional floral arrangements. The Press Book captured a Gold Ribbon in Communications competition for the second year in a row. SWC took "Best All Around Work in the District" Award for Arts/Creative, Arts/Performing, Education, Home Life/Social Services, International Affairs, Legislation/Resolutions, Membership, Public Affairs, Communications, and Special State Project. Other SWC members received awards for outstanding service in areas of leadership and membership. The SWC Scrapbook captured First Place. Recently, the SWC also voted to contribute funds raised with its December 2003 Chinese Auction to both the Sparta Library and Project Self Sufficiency. The donations were presented in March. In keeping with SWC goals to support community educational efforts, Dorothy Dedrick, Literature Department Chair, presented a check for $400 to Project Self Sufficiency for their educational programs. Additionally, she presented a check for $400 to the Sparta Library to be added to the money needed for a rack to store books on compact discs. The affiliation with libraries is integral to the larger General Federation of Women's Clubs which has founded more than 75 percent of America's public libraries over the Federation's history. The Sparta club has been a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs since 1949 through its affiliation with the 10th District of the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs. The club is open to all women of Sparta who are interested in civic-minded and community-centered activities.
