Burrell to preside at final meeting as Sussex County Dem chair
Glenwood The Sussex County Democratic Party has officially announced that Howard Burrell will resign his position as party Chairman. Burrell will make a formal announcement of resignation during the Sussex County Democratic Party’s general meeting scheduled for Monday, Jan. 8. His decision to resign was determined by his acceptance of a senior management position in Governor Jon Corzine’s administration. Burrell now serves as Assistant Director of Income Security in New Jersey’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development. “I have had the privilege of being the leader of the Sussex County Democrats for almost two years, and during that time, we have successfully established a positive and robust organization,” said Burrrell. Burrell proudly observes that party participation in civic and political activities, at both the county and state levels, has significantly increased. He credits a large part of his successful term as Chairman to the people of Sussex County. “I am honored to have had the trust and support of not just Democrats, but also a host of undeclared voters, and a growing number of Republicans in Sussex County who have become disappointed and disillusioned with their party’s attitude and behavior at the national, state and county levels,” he added. The Vice Chairperson of the Sussex County Democratic Party, Megan Ward, is expected to assume the party’s leadership post when Burrell steps down. Ward is a partner and practicing attorney with the Newton-based law firm of Kelly and Ward. In a letter to party members, supporters and friends, Burrell states: “While I will resign my position as Chair, my active involvement in our efforts to offer the people of Sussex County real choices to the status quo will continue. The 2006 election cycle has marked yet another successful milestone in our party-building efforts. George Graham and Michael Depew enabled us to sweep two contested Stanhope Borough Council seats, and Jim Sekelsky enabled us to triumph in the Ogdensburg mayoral race. I ask that you please join me in using our successful 2006 election results as a launching pad for a successful 2007.” The next general meeting of the Sussex County Democratic Party is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m., to be held in the private meeting room at the Hampton Diner, located on Route 206, just north of Newton. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, including directions to the Hampton Diner, visit the SCDP Web site at www.sussexdems.com.
